StumbleUpon Traffic For Blogs

December 5, 2007 – 4:09 pm

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I happen to get a decent amount of traffic here at Blog Republic from StumbleUpon. It’s not a service I’ve ever used much, and not one that I ever tried to “game”, so it’s fair to call the traffic “organic.” The traffic will flare up every now and again for an old post, and usually the StumbleUpon traffic is the reason.

The traffic doesn’t click much on ads, but I’m sure any new visitors to a website are worth money. If nothing else, the SU traffic is exposed to your blog, and has a chance to visit again or subscribe to the RSS Feed. I’m not one to turn down any free traffic.

I’m sure it would be pretty easy to inflate/game the SU traffic easily, but at this stage of the game, that’s not an endeavor I’ll be experimenting with.

What are your results with StumbleUpon traffic on your blog? Oh, and thanks to whoever it is that submits the pages!

Posting Through The Pain - Soldiering On When You’re Not In The Mood To Blog

December 4, 2007 – 3:02 pm

There will be days when you just don’t feel like making a blog post. It can happen to anyone. This particular feeling of malaise can strike at any time and leave you wondering whether you will ever hit the “Publish” button again. When you feel like this, you only have a few choices. Mainly you take some time away from the computer, or you can decide to “soldier on” and do your posting job.

Corbis Offering Free Pictures For Bloggers

November 28, 2007 – 6:25 am

Corbis is a large stock image company that has come up with what they think is a solution to the problem of unlicensed photos. The company is allowing bloggers to use some photos in exchange for the right for Corbis to run ads on the pics.

Corbis and its digital rights partner, PicScout, will allow bloggers to access photos via a Web link from the site PicApp.com, now in a test phase, Corbis Chief Executive Gary Shenk told the Reuters Media Summit in New York on Tuesday.

The photos will either include an ad overlay on part of the image, or embedded advertising that pops up when a Web user runs a cursor over the picture.

“We work with a partner so that those pictures are tracked, and if they’re being used illegally, we can figure that out,” Shenk said. “But as long as they are downloaded through this application, you’re legit and you’re ready to go.”

The effort is the first of its’ kind, and seems to follow the principle that Google has been promoting for years: give away the “product” and charge advertisers for ads. How well this will go over remains to be seen.

The offering is limited in which pictures can be used, so that’s one drawback. Corbis has been doing everything they can to turn a profit, so the new business model might work.

What do you think of this plan by Corbis?

Even A Small Blog Can Make Money

November 27, 2007 – 5:52 pm

If you have a blog on any decent subject, you should be able to make a decent profit with a blog. This is true even if your blog isn’t the best one its’ class. I have a few blogs that are nothing special and haven’t been worked on that much, but still earn over $100/monthly. The key is to maximize your revenue streams, and update the blog at least 20 times per month.

Blogging Around The Holidays

November 26, 2007 – 3:00 pm

Since Thanksgiving was coming I decided to lighten up on my blogging. Why not go with the flow, I figured. People are traveling and shopping, not reading blogs. Of course that’s not completely true, but I expected much smaller numbers around the holiday and I had them. I ended up catching up on some rest, and taking it very, very easy. The result is I returned from my short hiatus today, feeling much more lively.

Chitika Linx Review

November 13, 2007 – 5:57 pm

Now I really have never cared for Chitika much. Their Minimalls didn’t appeal to me and the company didn’t overwhelm me in any way. But when I saw they had developed an “inline ad” I decided to look because I’ve been able to make decent money with Kontera. So I’ve been test-driving the Chitika Linx program for about a week and have seen some decent “unaudited” earnings.

The Joy Of Blogging

November 12, 2007 – 4:00 pm

Blogging is a lot easier to do when you’re joyful, as is basically every human task. When you feel good about something, anything, it’s much easier to accomplish your work. And blogging really is no different. If blogging becomes something that you hate, you’ll end up not doing it. So how can you approach blogging with joy?

All you need to do is think of all the good things that can happen when you blog. You’re creating a valuable piece of cyber real estate that can you make money for years. Every time you sit down and compose your thoughts for the potential readers, it gives you a chance to improve your writing skills, and your ability to perform critical thought. Blogging is a skill that enhances how you communicate with others.

Plus picture the joy you get from the concept of a “job well done.” When your blogging is done for the day, you can sit, contented, knowing that your archive is that much bigger, and your revenue stream is that much fatter. Oh joy!

Blogs Need A Lot Of Ads To Earn

November 8, 2007 – 12:48 pm

If you’re shy about plastering ads all over your blog, you might have trouble monetizing. Blogs are valuable real estate, and they need a lot of ads in order to make sure you’re getting your money’s worth. You don’t want to offend your visitors, but you really don’t want to be late on your bills, so you need to think like a newspaper. Go to almost any newspaper website and you’ll see tons of ads, just like the offline version of the paper.

Blogging And The Long Tail Of Search

November 6, 2007 – 3:34 pm

If you plan on making a living from blogging, there are two skills you need to learn, and you need to bone up quick. You will have a tough time making money online if you don’t get any search engine love, and when I say search engine, I more specifically mean Google. Google is the source of fresh blog visitors in the same way that Nature is the bounteous provider of the sunshine and seeds mortals thrive on. You must attract Google traffic to survive.

Make Your Blog’s Archive Bigger And More Profitable

November 5, 2007 – 11:56 am

At some level it’s basically true to say that more posts in your blog’s archive will make you more money. But there are a few caveats worth noting. If you rely mainly on Google Adsense for your income, you need to understand that very different levels of CPM come into play, depending on what keywords you optimize for. It’s easier than you realize to “increase traffic” all the while “lowering your CPM.”
