At some level it’s basically true to say that more posts in your blog’s archive will make you more money. But there are a few caveats worth noting. If you rely mainly on Google Adsense for your income, you need to understand that very different levels of CPM come into play, depending on what keywords you optimize for. It’s easier than you realize to “increase traffic” all the while “lowering your CPM.”
If your CPM drops while your traffic increases, you’ll feel you’re getting screwed
When you add a lot of traffic and end up with very little extra money, the feeling can be quite antagonistic to your long term benefit. Most of us are accustomed to the idea of working harder and getting better results because of it. But if you drive traffic to your website that’s not worth as much as your current traffic, you can see an increase in visitors and not much money to show for it. So keep that in mind when you phase in new content pages that bring new visitors.
Let’s use a basic example:
Most of your traffic comes to your website searching for “DVD players”. You end up landing high in the search rankings for “free dvd”. You notice your traffic is almost double but the money barely goes up. That’s because advertisers are willing to pay you much less for someone interested in “free dvds” than for people searching for a “DVD player”. It’s simply based on their profit potential. So if you end up making a lot of pages without regard for commercial purposes, you can see how your overall archive value from a CPM value could plummet.
The way to make sure things are going your way is to merely add pages at a steady rate, and watch closely to see what occurs. If you can increase your traffic and maintain or increase your CPM, then a nice clean pay raise is on its’ way to you.
