There are a lot of wishy washy ways to measure your blogging success. You can decide on any arbitrary goals and go from there. If you say “My goal is to have 200 RSS readers in 3 months” and you accomplish it, then you’re really on to something. But, for me, there’s only one metric that I really care about: revenue. If my revenue numbers are higher each month than they were the month before, I’m happy. If not, I’m pissed off and ready to bust heads.
Blog revenue will give you a warm and fuzzy feeling inside
Why? Because you can buy goods and services with money! So if you’re not feeling warm and fuzzy, take your blog revenues and spend it on something to cheer yourself up. You cannot go to a store and say, “I’m a bit short on cash this month, but I do have 200 RSS readers, perhaps we can work something out.” They’ll just toss you out into the cold street on your broke ass, all the while guffawing at your naivety.
In the end, revenue is the most important metric
Blog revenue will tell you how good of a job you’re doing, in economic terms. Sure, a high Pagerank or a low Alexa score might stroke your ego for a second, but they won’t do much when it comes time to pay your bills, or take some money for a well-earned vacation. And metrics that don’t involve revenue will never tell you if you made the right decision quitting your medical career to become a blogger. Only revenue can do that.
So every month, just make a simple goal. That is to do more revenue than the month prior. If you can do this consistently, there is no possibility of failure. If you can gain at a rate of 6% monthly, you can double your money every year.
Is your revenue going up, staying the same, or heading down?
