Basic Versus Advanced Blogging

Post you make can range anywhere from very basic to incredibly advanced, and the reason for them being that way will almost solely rest on your audience. Web development blogs, which talk about Ajax or CSS or the like, tend to go into great detail and offer example source code. As a matter of fact, web developments blogs usually tend towards being of a finer quality, just based on the subject matter and the intended audience.
You can determine just how advanced your posts need to be
If you’re covering popular events, and making comments on news-driven items, you probably won’t go into great detail. If you’re doing How-Tos on complex subjects, the more in-depth you’ll be expected to go. Just use common sense. You can also just ask your readers. Say: “Hey, do you want me to go more in-depth?” or something along those lines.
For most subjects, I’m convinced you’re better off with a higher quantity of short posts than a lower quantity of very lengthy posts. Again, this might vary depending on what field you’re in. But for typical product oriented blogs, you probably will do better hitting 5+ times a day, rather than writing one long essay on the subject.
In fact, I rarely ever write “long ones.” I consider it from time to time to do it as “link bait”, but then I remember the reality of how I blog. I’m better off hitting more often than spending a lot of time on one piece, which probably won’t hit the front page of Digg, since I haven’t taken the time to build a corrupt ring of voters anyway!
So tell me, do you go for the long in-depth posts or are you a quick-hitter?

Darren I think the crucial point is how you can contribute. The readers who come to your website should return after gaining something. The length of your post should depend on the subject and the necessity. I write a mixture of long and short posts: it depends on how much I want to say. I never intentionally write my posts long or short. The primary aim is, to share something valuable, useful, implementable, with your readers.

Good point Amrit.
Just forget about word count and serve the reader. Seems easy
