Most Blog Content Is Overrated

It doesn’t take long to run into a “blog evangelist” online. People who love blogging tend to become enthused and tell others about the great activity they’ve discovered. And blogging can be great, but a lot of people have unrealistic expectations about what blog content can actually do for you.

Blogs need content but not all content is created equal

You can’t not add content to a blog. So you’re always encouraged to add content, but no one is usually exactly clear about what kind. If your editorial policies aren’t well developed, you might get into the idea of adding all kinds of content, despite having no clear intention of the purpose of the page, or how it will help build the blog.

Adding pages aimlessly is almost as bad as not adding pages at all. Not updating at all is even worse, but if your posts aren’t generating much interest, it’s obvious you’re missing the mark when it comes to your audience.

Target your content to a purpose

Rather than just report aimlessly on events going around you, you might want to devote some of your time to making completely original pieces that have both a viewpoint, and a plan. I’m not saying you need to be overly calculating with all of you efforts, but you have to intend for something to happen when you post. The intentions can be:

1) Get people to post
2) Get people to visit an interior post
3) Promote a product or service
4) Sell them something!

The list can go on and on, but purposeful posting is a matter of discipline that can end up increasing your blog’s focus. Always think about just what it is you’re attempting to convey, and polish up your piece before hitting the submit button. Almost all content will be forgotten quickly, but if even 10% of your content can endure (in the form of attracting links and visitors), then you’re doing just great.

What is your approach to content creation?

    2. Well I can say I’m guilty of all the problems their, I really should stick to 1 subject but at the moment it is easier to write about things around me if i try to stick to one subject you will find that my posts go down by alot maybe one a month which isn’t good for my archive.

    3. I often hesitate to post because I don’t like the quality of the content. Ironically, my blog tends to succeed when I stop worrying about perfection and focus on doing the best I can and then hitting publish within a reasonable amount of time.

I agree - write toward a given purpose. And definitely - there is a LOT of overrated content out there.

    4. It’s tough to create amazing content each and every day. Very few people can truly do it.

    5. My approach is coincidently same as yours even though those afflicted with ‘hits mania’ may not agree. It is the hard reality that huge hits may be just a flash in the pan but the content is supreme.
