Blogging is like any online activity: it has its’ ups and downs. There’s an an ebb and flow that goes on every day with your traffic. If you’re completely motivated by traffic numbers, you may mistakenly identify rising traffic as your main source of joy. If you suffer even a small decline, you may be plummeted to the depths of depression. There’s no need for all of this emotional behavior.

If you do the work, the results follow. At some point you have to have at least this much faith in anything you do. If you’re overweight and you decide to run 4 miles daily until you lose the weight, there will be days when you feel like you’re having great results, and other times when you’re sure you’ve failed! It’s east to overreact. The same thing happens with blogging. Almost everyone overreacts when they’re blogging, and its really easy to do if you haven’t clearly defined your objectives.

People who have been blogging for years on tight niche subjects have to grit their teeth on many days when they’re trying to come up with new content. In some fields, you’ll end up repeating yourself, there’s just no way around it. When you hit a dry patch where your creativity has pretty much all but dried up, you’ll have to gather your internal resources and stick with the job. Like any job, blogging won’t always be fun, but it always has to done!

If blogging is bringing you down for a deeper reason (like you really hate what you’re blogging about), then you might have to seriously consider changing directions. If you really can’t bring yourself to enter another post in your WordPress, then you might have to re-consider what led you to this unhappy place. If need be, re-invent your efforts. Take what you’ve learned so far, and evolve.

How do you deal with the ebb and flow of blogging?
