Blogging: When You Don’t Have Anything To Say - Be Quiet

That’s the long and the short of it. Let’s say you’re a person who prides themselves in their ability to pound out a blog post no matter what the conditions. You figure your archive will be at least one post bigger, and your readers will have one more post to enjoy your thoughts. It’s a simple and logical thought. But it’s wrong! Why? Because if you “phone in your posts” people will notice. And if they notice you do it too often, they’ll turn on you like a neighbor who finds out you’ve been peeping in their windows!

Resist the urge to “post up” no matter what

You’re better off saving yourself for a higher energy post. Now, I’m not speaking about a day when you’re just being lazy, but I’m talking about when you’ve posted about the SAME DAMN SUBJECT for 180 days straight and you have no clever and incisive commentary to offer. When you’re feeling crispy fried and burnt out, you’re more likely to leave everyone scratching their heads, rather than pondering the amazing question you pondered.

Every blogger will experience burnout at some point

Since the task “never ends”, blogging is a unique burden. If you’re in a tight niche, you’re bound to realize you’ve talked about most of the subjects already. Then you have to dig deeper and try looking at some minute detail of the area in even more excruciating detail. Or, you could just forget posting that day, go Bungee Jumping, or whatever it is you do to relax, and come back with a head full of fresh ideas.

Do you ever feel pressured to post when you’re not in the mood? How does it affect the quality of the post?

  2. Hey Darren!

Its so coincidental - I just posted about blogger burnout yesterday.

What do I do when I feel I have nothing to say? Yeah, like what you say is true - just stop posting, and go and read some funny stuff, play some games, and things like that. ;)
I think its better to post two good posts a week than ten post of mediocre quality.

Of course, one can also prepare for burnout days with ready articles saved in your drafts :)

  3. Nice job on the post, Kian!

You just gave me the idea for today’s post. I admit I never “pre-write” and posts in it :)
