Blogging will leave you penniless, arthritic, and possibly insane

But only if you’re not careful. Because the act of “blogging” is no guaranteed road to success. Just because you “blog” doesn’t guarantee anything. There’s so much more to it nowadays. Look at the people blogging. The people who are really raking in the money know what they’re doing. Their success is not a mistake. If you’re out there, randomly entering text, you stand to be ground under by the blogging elite.

How much of the total blogging audience goes to the elite bloggers only? My guess is the percentage is HUGE. Sure, everyone reads the top 100 blogs, but who reads the leftovers? You know, the 75 million other blogs that are being updated constantly? If you’re one of the unwashes masses (as I am), and not one of the Royal Family of Blogging, you can expect a street fight on your hands to get the necessary readership to gain critical mass.

Have you tried spamming one of the popular social news websites lately? I have, and I’ll tell you, the piece of the pie is getting smaller. How many people now submit every single story they right to all of the social news sites? I’m close to doing it. That means submissions are probably at an all time high, and your piece of the pie is smaller than ever before. That means even hustling isn’t a guarantee to success.

Times are tough in the blogosphere, because of all of the competition. But that also means that the audience is enormous. If this many people are blogging daily, scrapping every step of the way, then there must be a few coins out there for each of us.

But the question now becomes: how can I most efficiently boost revenue through blogging? I have some opinions I’ll lay out in the next few weeks, and I’d love to hear your thoughts right now.

    2. hah, a humorous title and it caught my eye immediately, well done!

It’s so true, Yvonne was just blogging the same thing recently, people just jump onto the latest news story to be part of the crowd, no doubt it gets you hits and traffic, but I’d rather stand out if I can’t contribute anything to the story. For some, like a news blog it’s a necessary evil, it’s what the blog is all about in the first place. This doesn’t necessary mean that one has to limit blogging to “whats in the news”…blog uniquely, be different, it works.

    3. Blogging is a new field and that is perhaps why here competition is less than other fields. Social bookmarking sites have created a level playing field for all the bloggers. You stand in a good chance to shine there just like any other blog or webiste if your content is good enough. The key to succeed si to rpovide useful or interesting content everyday. I have been visiting your blog for the last 4 months (may be more) and I can see that now we have more discussion here than 2 months ago. Since you could provide something to talk about, people partipates in the discussion.

    4. It’s all about creating a community in the end I think, the old 80/20 rule may apply here, 80% of your traffic should be return visitors versus 20% new.
