I’m subscribed to very few RSS feeds - other than my own

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
This might be an interesting revelation to people reading this blog: prior to really attempting to make money from blogging starting around March 15th of 2006, I rarely, if ever, even read blogs. Even 6 months later, I’ll be honest, I still barely read them. I surf around and end up reading many blog posts in a day, but there’s barely any that I’m interested enough in to read every day.
In particular, I shun the “A-List blogs”. I have no idea what people see in most of these blogs. I assume they were just first to market and got a mass audience. But I really can’t stand most of the blogs in the Technorati 100.
So what does this confession tell you? Am I alone? I’m a shameless profiteer. Perhaps the “New Standard” was right after all. But they weren’t. Even though I’ve approached the industry of blogging with an eye towards profit, I’ve attempted to hold myself up to the ideals of
1) building integrity
2) establishing my indentity
3) write high quality and unique content
These are the same ideals, I suppose, that most “true bloggers” are into also, so in some ways, I guess I’ll end up in the same place. But I do sometimes wonder what it would be like to “have passion” for my subject. Would it make my job any easier? Could it even? The job is already very easy.
So back to the orginal topic: the only blogs I’m subscribed to now are “people I know” and multi-author news blogs that could serve as sources of articles. I’m living outside the echo chamber and within it, all at the same time.
How many blogs are you subscribed to? Do you read blogs for enjoyment?

I’m constantly adding blogs…it’s a sickness. It doesn’t seem to be fading.
It does however require me to increase my speed reading abilities so that’s a plus.

Exactly. I can’t believe how MUCH some of these blogs post. It’s an unreal speed.
I subscribe to you blog, btw. I’d define your interests as eclectic.

I’m with Jason here - I definately have too many feeds. I often end up just clicking on a whole category and then reading something else, just to mark the items as read. If I actually read every post on every feed I subscribe to, I would have long ago been fired from my day job and divorced, because it would take all my time. I am constantly cleaning out feeds I never read, but I have the problem of adding feeds constantly too. Endless cycle.

So then the next question we may have to get into is how to sift through all of this info…

I have not subscribed to any feed of a blog but I read a lot of blogs every day and may of them quite regularly. When it comes to subscribing a feed, I use Opera browser and have subscribed to keywords from Google news about the topics that I cover. I try to go through them as much as I can and thus try to remain updated on my fields.

I’ve never found much of interest to be honest in the A-list. Many are there not because of their ability to write or content but rather because they were there first and if nothing else the A-list is great at embracing its own while saying how good they and excluding others outside the list

I dont use feeds, it gets too much. What I do is visit the blogs I enjoy reading.

Good post. I subscribe to feeds using Bloglines and have way too many feeds. I like this idea of “no feeds”. Te other thing you can do is setup RSS feeds for topics rather then specific blogs using Technorati. I may consider this approach.

Thanks for the comments, guys.
I’m pretty sure that “organizing blog information” is a stated goal of a lot of organizations, but few have made it happen so far.

Of course choosing to visit blogs or subscribe is a matter of personal preference and taste but i find that, as a blogger, i have built relationships with people through visiting their blogs & commenting. I have also learned a few things from them. This part of blogging is very rewarding for me personally. I happen to blog in a real estate niche but do stray off topic–it’s just a matter of personality. I do subscibe to your blog & some A listers but I dont judge anyone by their technorati rating which I suspect is not accurate as a quality meter anyway. It all boils down to what you like anyway.
One thing I would add about RSS feeds I find useful—-I can set up a feed for searches (not all the time but often) or any site that updates content , like apartment ads on cragislist. I use bloglines and have the icon “sub with bloglines on my toolbar”. Anytime I find an interesting site, or search, I hit the icon & I get the feed if there is one.

Last thing: try stumbleupon.com for web surfing.
