Blogging - you can do it for love, ego, or money

That’s what I think. There are 3 basic categories of blogging. Some bloggers do it because they just love to talk about their subject. Others love the ego-gratification of blogging. They get to hear feedback, and it fuels their desire to continue blogging. And last but not least, is the blogger who is motivated by cash. They come to the game looking to make money.

None of these reasons for blogging are either right or wrong. They just are. And no matter what you use to motivate you, you still need to do the work. So ultimately a person who posts for cash might end up looking a lot like someone who posts because of passion, even though they used different paths to arrive in the same place.

It’s the motivation that will keep you blogging over time. And doing it for a series of months is what ultimately leads to a readership. Stop/start blogging will not keep the people around. They’re much too busy to keep up with blogs that only infrequently update. So the person who keeps on posting, and remains positive is likely to pick up ground over someone who just “blogs” without a sense of direction.

What do you think of my categories? Are any of these the reason you blog? If not, tell me why you do it.

  2. I do it to unload my mind a bit and to spark discussion, arguments, debates. So I suppose that would be a combination of love and ego-gratification. The only functioning blog I have now, is sort of an upchuck of thoughts, so money doesn’t really come into play. However, future blogs may be inspired by all three reasons.

  3. I blog because i enjoy blogging. If i was here for the money then i would have given up before i reached the stage of actually making any and no one ego driven would have been able to stand that :-)

  4. Nice answers. In a sense, I guess the ego always drives us. There’s no avoiding that.

  5. Darren,
My blogging is intended to belong to all the three categories of blogging. I am trying to have a judicious blend. My intuition prompts me to jack up the first one, retain a little of second one and leave whatever remains for the third. Reversing the order will be a heady cocktail for me.

  6. Since I started blogging, I can’t seem to stop, it’s just finding that time to sit down and write that eludes me. I don’t do it for the big bucks, not yet anyway.
