What steps can you take to improve blog quality and readership numbers?

That’s the main key for anyone who wants to make money blogging. The game is simple: the more people who visit your site, the more money you earn. Sure, there’s a bit more complexity than that, but the basic idea is true. You need eyeballs the same ways sports teams need butts. You have to fill the chairs in your stadium every day, and you do it with dedicated readers. Let’s look at what you can do to improve your blog and it’s perceived quality.
1) Build your credibility. Ultimately that’s the main thing your blog needs and the one thing you can never have enough of. Put your picture on your website. Write a bio. Do all the little things you can to enforce your credibility.
2) Write quality content. You’re competing with everyone’s blog. Take the time to write concise quality content and people are bound to read it. The more literate you are, the more literate your readers, IMHO. Don’t take any shortcuts on writing quality or it will hurt your credibility and your revenue.
3) Be social and create readers. Get out there in the blogosphere and social space and promote yourself. Promote your credibility and reliability. If you do that enough, you may end up being as famous as the Wall Street Journal. Or at least you’ll have a very well read blog. When in doubt, get out there and hustle.
4) Improve your blog design. Just try and make your blog as clean-loading as possible and reduce any obnoxious errors. Get rid of anything that screams “I’m an idiot.” You only have a brief time to impress your visitors, and then they’re gone forever. The visitors only has a few visual clues to judge you by, as well as your text.
You can also make sure to have links in easy reach to some of the more important concepts of your blog. If you sell a product, make sure to integrate a “Buy” button into the navigation. Consider just how busy your readers really are. You don’t want to distract them, but rather help them perform an action that will benefit both of you.

Darren,
Most of your posts are very useful for fence-sitters and beginners like me. That is why I find it irrestible and you unstoppable. I do not know how the tug of war between quality and quantity ends up - if you stress on ‘quality’, ‘quantity’ suffers and vice versa. Is it not?

Sorry for the typographical error in my previous comment. ‘irrestible’ should read as irresistible.

Satish,
Thanks for the kind words. I think it does suffer. If you rush your posts, you’re bound to suffer. There’s a balance. I find I can’t really make many more than 4 decent blog posts in a day.

I just wrote a post on this. This may sound stupid but make it easy for readers to subscribe to your blog.
