One of the most unique advantages of blogging

I feel that one of the most unique advantages of blogging is the ability to isolate and extend conversations that are occuring elsewhere on the internet. Threads can beget other threads, and tangential discussions can go on to bear even greater fruit than the original. Think of the blogosphere as millions of sidestreets. And if you aren’t careful, you can get lost in the conversation for hours.

It really is stunning just how many blogs there are. They cover nearly every topic conceivable, and often in minute detail. There’s more information available to people than humans 100 years ago could have dreamt how much varied knowledge was there’s for the taking. We have to consider ourselves lucky.

But the one downside to too much info, is information overload. We need to filter our online reading, or we’d be stuck forever just reading posts. And for this reason, people tend to rank blogs in order of importance. The key for any blogger to gain success is to be in people’s list of blogs for a subject, after they’ve filtered out the blogs they don’t think matters.

And how can we do this? The only way possible is by being original and attempting to provoke discussion, which can lead to further discussion. When the talk dries up, you can almost rest assured that your material is running dry.
