Alright, we’re getting more and more into the nitty gritty of making money with a blog now. We know that we we need to make our blog sticky, so we can experience exponential growth in page views and revenues. Let’s not overlook a serious way of doing this: engaging people in serious conversation is a great way to drive your page views up. What are some ways you can do this?

  • Make sure you make commenting easy - only a true buffoon has the comments on their blog closed. I can’t stress that enough. If you have your comments closed, you have blogging ALL wrong. Open up comments, encourage comments, and make it easy to comment. People will comment if they’re sure it’s easy
  • Comment back and keep the conversation going. You’re an emcee and you have to engage your participants or the conversation might falter
  • Don’t censor people - if you have rules about commenting, make sure to include a link so that your readers know your rules - be consistent in their enforcement
  • Follow up and post more articles on the topics that your commenters are interested in - what surer way to get their attention and interest than to show them you care by custom crafting content?

Why is conversation the killer app of blog revenue generation? Simply because it gets people to your website. It makes them come in the first place and it encourages them to return daily or more often. Each time they’re involved, your blog gets another pageview or click, which is the lifeblood of your online business. As your pageview numbers rise because of conversation, your money goes up accordingly.

Do not overlook something as simple as comments. Conversation has always been the basis of the allure of blogs, and the conversation with customers is where the real money is for companies who get into blogging.

    2. Thanks for the post - it got me thinking :-)

Although i guess it falls in the making commenting easy category i would have included something about avoiding commenting systems where the commenter has to sign up for something like blogger just to be able to post a comment. Its my number one pet hate of commenting and generally i just move on instead!
