Earn money blogging series: Master The Basics

The first posting in our new Earn money blogging series is “Master the basics”. This is true of any field, but especially so of blogging. There’s a lot of details to get right, and you need to make sure you don’t miss any. Every post is like an Olympic event: if you fail, the public will discard you like yesterday’s donuts. If you succeed, you’ll join other greats in the Pantheon. Do you know one thing that every Champion throughout the ages in every endeavor has been? Someone who mastered the basics.

Michael Jordan wasn’t born as the greatest basketball player on Earth. He became that through sheer persistence and determination. In fact, he was cut from the high school basketball team as a sophomore. What made him go on to become a legend? He didn’t accept his fate and he went on to master the basics that make a basketball player great. The things he wasn’t good at, he learned to master through sheer effort and repetition. If you’re willing to do the work, and you constantly improve your craft, success becomes your rightful dominion and can’t be denied by others.

When you achieve mastery of your subject matter, you exude a confidence that’s bound to win you more converts. People look up to experts, and people bookmark and return to resources that they consider valuable. How do you make them valuable? By including useful and valuable information that only an insider would know.

What are the basics when it comes to blogging? What essential ingredients can’t be skipped when you’re attempting to cook the perfect blog stew?

  • Clear and logical thought - you must lay out your thoughts clearly
  • A consistent voice and scheduled posting - self discipline is key
  • The ability to research when your subject is of a technical nature
  • Competence in the area of website promotions - you’ll fail if no one finds your blog
  • A focus on quality and tightly related content - the real money comes from the synergistic effect of many pages on one subject on a blog - people will research at your blog and send others along gladly
  • Linking to others and finding good stories to comment in - being a part of the social space in your vertical is all important
  • Growing your RSS and email subscribers by consistent updating

All of these are key features to get traffic to your blog, which is the main key to your ultimate plan to earn money blogging. The more quality traffic you have, the more revenue you make. In our next post in the Earn Money Blogging Series, we’ll take a look at ways to get traffic to your website.

Michael Jordan wasn’t the greatest basketball player of all time when he started. But by the time he retired in 2003, he was a 5-time NBA MVP who had scored 32,292 points. Not bad for a kid who just didn’t have the skills when he first tried out for the team. If we follow Michael Jordon’s lead, and we master the basics of blogging, we have a shot at becoming the greatest of all time. And if we don’t achieve that, at least we can pay our bills and work very flexible hours!

Well, said and I agree with you. I have been professionally blogging for last 3 months. At first, I had to struggle a lot to get some daily traffic but as the days are going by, everything is turning to be better and better. I am not worried by getting hits anymore and in technorati my blog is moving fast too.

  3. Razib,

Thanks for the comments. I’m pretty sure it gets better and better as time goes on. As long as your audience gets bigger, you really can’t lose.

And I think the global readership of blogs is going up all the time. You’re in the right place at the right time being a professional blogger.

BTW, Razib, I believe it was your post that helped me find my first professional blogger who will be starting later this month for us at Blog Republic, so thanks for your help,

    Darren
