One more advantage of blogging is the fact you get to talk to people from all around the world. The best part is, these people will communicate with you, which can only make you a better blogger. Every business in the world needs customers, and the businesses which do the best are the ones that listen to their customers. They go to great lengths to send surveys to their customers to find out if they had an enjoyable experience. With a blog, feedback is instant!

It’s easy to feel a sense of isolation as a webmaster. Sure, you can check your log files, and you will talk to people, but you get a sense that you’re “waiting” for something to happen. With a blog, someone will comment right away. You can get into a conversation with them, and you can even go ahead and incorporate their suggestions into your next post. This gives you a chance to get better each day at your craft.

Talk to the People

For awhile I had a blog, and I left the comments closed, or required people to register in order to read. This definitely helped with the “Comment Spammers”, but it didn’t do much to create a “feedback loop” for my website. In fact, I had a few blogs that sat around, unwritten to and unloved. They sat their like a person at a party who has their arms folded and a scowl on their face. Everyone was too nervous to start a conversation, so the poor blog remained a wallflower. When I opened the blogs to the readers, the flow of ideas came faster than I could imagine, and the free exchange of information allowed me to become a better blogger just that fast.

If you haven’t made it easy for your visitors to comment, you might be missing out on a chance to receive feedback which can tell you where you stand and what you need to do in order to get better. Not all of the feedback will be pleasant, but some of it will trigger a series of thoughts which might lead you to a breakthrough concerning the future of your blog. The more that you communicate with your readers, the easier it becomes to write material that applies to your readership. Knowing your subject and knowing your audience is the best way to make sure you’re meeting the needs of the internet.

    2. Great point, Darren. A lot of my favorite conversations at my own blog have grown out of posts where I’ve simply asked for readers to answer a question of mine.

    3. in reface to “talking to people all over the world” I have seen a site translation script. Its just a small program, but can convert your whole site into any language you want, maybe you could implement it here

      http://babelfish.altavista.com

a fish that converts bogs into any language, this may put the translators out of business!
