If I had to name one single benefit from blogging that outweighs the others, I’d probably say that blogging can help communicate who you are better than other website formats. Since bloggers tend to update daily, and are in touch with their personal lives, you get to know people in a way that wasn’t really possible 10 years ago. Add in the video and audio capabilities of podcasting, and you can reach out to a global audience, and you can do it without a huge marketing budget.

People knowing your name is the single greatest wealth builder you can have. Look at 50 cent. Eminem. Even their nicknames are global products. People get to know musicians through their music, and for that reason their brand recognition is some of the highest in the world. People figure they can trust a celebrity they know, regardless of how ridiculous that may seem on the surface. For this reason, celebrity endorsers are almost always effective. If you build your name, some sort of financial increase is inevitable.

A branded blogger is someone who can:

  • Find new projects - popular bloggers are approached all the time witih new business deals and opportunities
  • Build an online “resume” of sorts that will give people a chance to review a lot about you. Tech savvy employers will love your blogging skills, and it may even be beneficial to your employment
  • Command money as a speaker or author because of their expert status. Perhaps you weren’t considered an expert when you started blogging, but you now are. There’s big equity in name recognition

For this reason, as bloggers we need to strive to make our blog posts identifiable. Someone reading our blogs should recognize a distinctive style that is “me” when they read your posts. That way, someone will know it’s you before they even see the masthead. As you gain readership, and build even greater levels of trust, your name recognition will open more doors than you can imagine. Be yourself when you’re blogging and the rest should take care of itself.

    2. I think that this is where some people that build websites fail.
The only thing you have on the internet (or really anywhere else in this life) is your name. As you stated, Rock stars don’t get famous without one ;)

If you’re an anonymous “ghost” writer, you don’t get any recognition for your hard work. There’s no pride and no joy in most “nameless” blogs that I’ve the misfortune of landing on. There’s no reason to return, and I hit the X button as quickly as possible.

In those cases, I guess the publisher doesn’t really care, but maybe he’d be more successful if he had an identity.
