The Visual Rich Editor in WordPress 2.0 really sucks

I pretty much love all of the other features in WordPress, but the Visual Rich WYSIWYG Editor was just killing me. I understand some people don’t like typing in HREFs and the like, but I don’t mind, and this think is screwing up on some easy concepts.

Secondly, it was hard to find the option to turn it off. Luckily, Exploding Boy has the answer:

A lot of people I’ve spoke to, and many blog posts I have read have been really unhappy with the new visual editor in WordPress 2.0. It is pretty simple to revert back to the traditional post interface without all the WYSIWYG additions, but a lot of people aren’t sure how, or where to find the option. Click the “Users” menu in the WP admin area to access your profile. Once you are on the “Users” page scroll to the bottom of the page, and uncheck the “Use the visual editor” option. Once you have done this click the save button and you are back to the old, comfortable, pre-2.0 interface that we all love.

Great! That worked and I’m back to basics. I’m sure some people will love the Visual Rich Editor, but I’d be very careful of “munged code” like you get in FrontPage. The thing goes nuts if you do a blockquote and an unstructured list at the same time! Whoa :) I’d go so far as to say mine blew up one of my posts, when I didn’t want to take out all of the font size commands manually. In any event, turning it off did the trick so I can’t complain too much.

  3. It does sorta suck, but there is a way to make it marginally better. It’s actually pretty easy hack to add some much needed functionality. Check it out:

  4. I’m about ready to throw wordpress out just because of its piece of crap text editor. I’ve been messing with it for 25 minutes to do two paragraphs and a form that posts to an email-rss website. It just won’t let me space the paragraphs, image, and form out the way I want. If I edit the html directly it either just strips my changes out or screws up the whole page. !
